Commissions to Stefano Gervasoni and Paolo Pacchini

PHACE - Ensemble for New Music, Vienna (AT)

For the ensemble PHACE, Stefano Gervasoni (composition) and Paolo Pacchini (video) are creating a full-length work for 8 vocal voices, 16 instruments and video on the occasion of the anniversary year of Pier Paolo Pasolini.

In Nomine PPP – Cantata per Pier Paolo Pasolini is a homage to Pier Paolo Pasolini and his political and cultural role in Italian and European society in the 1960s and 1970s. The work focuses on the conceptual knot of the relationship between barbarism and civilisation that is at the centre of Pasolini's vision and the search for an authenticity of a human being. An authenticity of the human being that is destined to change its meaning or even be lost in the process of social, cultural, technological, political changes of the industrialised world.

The dramaturgy of the work is based on a selection of Pasolini's poems and writings and follows the formal structure of a large cantata. It includes interludes in which some compositions by Josquin Desprez, based on the theme of lament, mourning for the loss of someone, regret, are performed by the vocal ensemble in their original entirety and at the same time interwoven with the instrumental ensemble in Stefano Gervasoni's own sound world.

This musical structure is closely linked to the dramaturgy of Paolo Pachini's video. Paying homage to Pasolini's anthropological vision, the video presents poetic and exemplary images of man and nature juxtaposed with contemporary media streams, which are in turn explored and transformed by the eye of the camera.
