Wien Modern 35

Wien Modern – Verein für neue Musik, Vienna (AT)

The Wien Modern Festival, founded by Claudio Abbado in 1988, is Austria's largest platform for contemporary music and one of the world's largest festivals in this field, both in terms of the number of events and attendance figures. The 35th edition in 2022 presents over 40 productions with more than 60 performances at over 20 venues throughout Vienna. With concerts, events and formats that are rich in contrast to one another, the aim is not only to make visible the aesthetic range of the art field of New Music, but above all to reawaken the desire to experience New Music together in a perceptibly overarching sense.

Visitors will experience a diverse program: an emphatically symphonic opening concert, followed immediately by an orchestral concert of the very young, electronic kind; Heiner Goebbels' theatrical view of orchestra and voice on the stage of the Volkstheater; Georg Friedrich Haas' four-hour walk-in spatial composition for 70 instruments from six centuries in the Kunsthistorisches Museum; and, on the same weekend, a subtle trio evening with Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Mark Simpson in the Mozart Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus. First and last works by Helmut Lachenmann; a multi-story spatial performance at the Musikverein; several multimedia and music theater projects; free-walking installation performances and then again-very quiet chamber music concerts to re-learn how to patiently perk up one's ears while sitting down. The focus is on experiencing the beautiful in the difficult, on listening to new music as a social skill that is not self-sustaining, but which is a source of shared joy to be experienced anew again and again. The Wien Modern 35 Festival is made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

A total of over 60 events will take place at more than 20 venues in Vienna from October 29 to November 30, 2022.
