The Symposium on the Archiving and Re-staging of Electroacoustic Music of the FU Berlin will take place on 29 and 30 November 2024.

26.11.2024

The Symposium on Archiving and Re-staging of Electroacoustic Music will take place on 29 and 30 November 2024 as an online format, but can also be attended on-site at the Institute of Theatre Studies at the FU Berlin. It was organised by Miriam Akkermann, who has held the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Professorship at the FU Berlin since last year.

The symposium will address the issue of archiving digital and digitised content. Everything we know about music comes from a very heterogeneous range of sources, including live experiences, related objects, paper-based sources and, nowadays, an increasing amount of digital content. With the transfer of digital or digitised content and associated technologies to archives, it is necessary to convert both native digital and digitised content into archivable formats and selections. This requires creative solutions to the challenge of transferring these sources to archiving institutions and being able to store them there. How can this content be structured and classified in the context of non-digital sources? What is archived and what is not – and how can this influence future performances? Or are completely different approaches needed to preserve pieces of music for analysis, listening and performance? Participants from various fields such as music research, archival science, media studies, archival institutions and performance practice will present their projects and ideas and discuss the different approaches and challenges.

The fourth edition of the biennial symposium on archiving and re-staging electroacoustic music (AREM) will be held under the motto ‘Technologies’.

The symposium is designed as an online format, but this year there is also the opportunity to listen to the lectures in Berlin on site (at the FU Berlin, Institute for Theatre Studies, lecture hall) in a hybrid setting. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required: AREM2024@theater.fu-berlin.de
