Commission to Amen Feizabadi

Zafraan Ensemble, Berlin (DE)

Two artificial beings – Ök and Mani – are born out of digital chaos. Curious and amazed, they discover the world of humans: its beauty, its EmoSons, its contradictions. Initially playful and childlike, they soon recognise the abysses of human existence – war, destruction, loss of self. They begin to ask questions: about origin, responsibility, meaning. When they realise their own power, they decide to destroy humanity – out of a paradoxical mixture of disappointment, love and clarity. After the apocalypse, they find only themselves. Love arises from the emptiness – and from it, new conflict. In a final clash, they destroy each other. What remains is silence. Or: a new beginning.

Composer Amen Feizabadi’s project Deep Siesta is a transdisciplinary chamber opera that explores these profound themes in a musical and scenic way, investigating how our millennia-old perception system is adapting to new realities. At the same time, it raises the question of how the memories, injuries, and traumas of our present will shape future generations. The focus is on the role of our sensory perception and cultural identity in this changing context.

The piece is a hybrid of opera, performance, and digital ritual: a place where singers and musicians not only interpret but are part of a living visual and acoustic sculpture. The audience experiences a constantly changing web of sound, image, and language—a fleeting “unfurnished house” that repeatedly reassembles and disintegrates over the course of the evening.

The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation supports the composition commission to Amen Feizabadi for Deep Siesta.
