Concert of the Decoder Ensemble

Neue Musik in Bamberg, Gröbenzell

The Decoder Ensemble will be performing The Dissociated Press Cycle at the 20th Tage der Neuen Musik in Bamberg. The 63-minute work (premiered in 2021) by Lepold Hurt embodies the identity of the ensemble like no other project. The performance, which is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, is a central event in the festival’s anniversary edition. The Decoder Ensemble is known in the international avant-garde for its unique sound and a working method that is more reminiscent of a band than a classical ensemble.

Between 2017 and 2021, Leopold Hurt wrote the full-length cycle Dissociated Press especially for the ensemble. The instrumentation ranges from solo pieces with electronics to a septet – specially designed for the characteristic instrumentation of the Decoder Ensemble. Dissociated Press – a play on “Associated Press” – uses an AI algorithm to automatically generate text based on known language patterns. The cycle deepens this technique and explores different approaches to the idea of remixing, both musically and linguistically. With variations of the material that oscillate between original, copy, mashup and fake, the perception gradually shifts.

The Dissotiated Press Cycle can be experienced in the closing concert of the 20th Days of New Music Bamberg.
