La Radio vuota - la memoria dei suoni
Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana, Lugano (CH)
The Swiss Italian Radio and Television (RSI) studios in Besso, Lugano, have played a key role in the cultural and musical development of Ticino. For decades, they served as a space for innovative sound production and influential recordings that contributed significantly to both Swiss and international contemporary music. In 2026, RSI will complete its move to Comano, leaving the Besso studios empty for a short period—a physical and symbolic “silence” before the site is redeveloped.
This transition is at the center of La Radio vuota. La memoria dei suoni, a new project in the 27th season of 900presente. Composer Andrea Molino has created a cross-media work combining video, live music, and electronics, using images of the vacant studios to reflect on their history. The 50-minute piece, written for a 20-member ensemble, explores the role of sound and memory in a space once filled with creative activity. At the same time, it marks the beginning of a new phase: the transformation of Besso into the Città della Musica, an international center intended for the study, production, and innovation of music in Ticino.
