Music Mingle
Department of Music, Stellenbosch University (ZA)
The Music Mingle is an annual event that brings together learners, teachers, and community members to rehearse and perform music. Participants spend the day working in large ensembles and engaging with peers from different schools and backgrounds. The day concludes with a performance in a professional concert venue, giving many young musicians their first experience of performing in such an environment.
In 2026, the project will expand to three separate events, each exploring South Africa’s diverse musical traditions through creative arrangements of Western art, popular, and indigenous music, as well as newly commissioned works. A new branch—the Grabouw Music Mingle—will focus on developing both musical and entrepreneurial skills among young people.
The initiative aims to provide meaningful opportunities for young people to engage in music where access is limited. It demonstrates how music can connect people, foster community, and encourage ongoing learning and skill development.
The Music Mingle is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
