Adventure New Music: Benjamin Scheuer
Deutscher Musikrat / Podium Gegenwart, Bonn (DE)
With the series Adventure New Music, the Deutscher Musikrat’s Podium Gegenwart organises educational projects on new music, especially with children and young people in the context of school lessons. To this end, music educators develop teaching concepts for works by young composers. They are supported by musicologists who have already studied the respective composers in depth.
In 2025, the focus is on the composer Benjamin Scheuer, an experienced artist with an individual musical language and aesthetic. Scheuer’s music is all about directly tangible sensuality and humour. The joy of making music and the search for unusual sounds are constant driving forces for him. The examination of sounds and sound sources found in everyday life, as used by Scheuer in his compositions, is particularly suitable for teaching in schools and, in a sense, picks up children and young people in their world.
The project, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, is taking place at the Albertus Magnus School in Viernheim in the second half of the 2025 school year. Maria Schneider-Hörl has been recruited as the music teacher in charge. The focus is on Benjamin Scheuer’s composition Bahnhof. Schneider-Hörl will devote several teaching units to working with Scheuer and his music, and a performance of the project results at the school is also planned. She will also be responsible for creating the music education materials. Prof. Dr. Gordon Kampe will provide musicological support for the project.
