Annesley Black

Biography

Annesley Black, born in the Canadian capital of Ottawa in 1979, studied composition with Brian Cherney at McGill University, Montreal, graduating in 2004. She continued her studies in Germany, first with York Höller and Hans Ulrich Humpert at the Cologne Academy of Music and Dance, then with Mathias Spahlinger (composition), Orm Finnendahl (electronic music) and Cornelius Schwehr (applied music) at the Freiburg Academy of Music, where she graduated in 2008. She teaches ear training at the Kronberg Academy, as well as electronic media/electronic composition at Dr Hoch’s Conservatory, Frankfurt/Main. Since 2013 she has lectured in music theory at the Frankfurt Academy of Music and Performing Arts. Black’s works have been performed at such festivals as ECLAT Stuttgart, Ultraschall Berlin, the Darmstadt International Summer Course, the Witten Festival for New Chamber Music and the Donaueschingen Festival. Performers of her music include Ensemble Modern, ensemble ascolta, Nouvel Ensemble Modern, ensemble SurPlus, ensemble mosaik, the Composers Slide Quartet and the hr Symphony Orchestra. In May 2018 she was selected as a member of the music department at the Academy of Arts, Berlin. Her music is published by Edition Juliane Peters. She lives in Frankfurt/Main with her husband Robin Hoffmann and their son.
