Yiqing Zhu

Biography

Yiqing Zhu (*1989) is a Chinese composer and pianist. He learnt to play a number of instruments as a child, including the piano, accordion and violin. In 2008, he began studying composition at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He continued his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Music as part of the Erasmus programme. He then went to the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart, where he graduated in 2019. His teachers include Huang Lv, Niels Rosing-Schow and Marco Stroppa. Zhu is currently a teacher of composition at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

Yiqing Zhu is not only interested in contemporary music. He also explores traditional Eastern music, electronic music, jazz, world music and popular music. In his works, he endeavours to break down the boundaries between the artificial and the natural, the technologically manipulated and the physically rooted, instrumentality and vocality.

He works internationally with ensembles and orchestras such as Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Klangforum Wien, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Moscow Ensemble for Contemporary Music, Mivos Quartet, Quatour Diotima, Ensemble Cikada, Ensemble Soundstreams, Ensemble Suono Giallo, Han String Quartet, Ensemble Novel, Copenhagen Piano Quartet, China-Asean Contemporary Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and Singapore Chinese Orchestra.

His works are performed at various music festivals such as Manifeste, ilSuono Contemporary Music Week, Lucerne Festival, Shanghai New Music Week, Festival Archipel, Dyce Project and Impuls Festival 2021.

For his orchestral work DeepGrey, Yiqing Zhu won the first prize of the Basel Composition Competition 2021. He is also the winner of the Impuls Competition (Graz) 2019, the Dyce Competition (Milan) 2019 and winner of the 3rd prize of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra Competition 2011.
