Gábor Tarkövi
Gábor Tarkövi was born in Esztergom, Hungary, in 1969 and comes from a family of musicians. He received his first trumpet lessons at the age of 9 from his father. After attending the music high school in the city of Gyűr, he studied with György Geiger at the Franz Liszt College of Music in Budapest in 1987. From 1990, he continued his studies at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest with Frigyes Varasdy. After completing his studies in Budapest, he received important musical inspiration from György Kurtág and Hans Gansch. His first engagements as deputy principal trumpeter took him to the Württemberg Philharmonic Orchestra in Reutlingen in 1991 and, in 1994, to the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (now the Konzerthaus Orchestra) as principal trumpeter.
In 1999, he moved to the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in the same position. Gábor Tarkövi has been principal trumpeter with the the Berlin Philharmonic since 2004.
In addition to his work with the orchestra, Tarkövi is passionate about chamber music. He is a member of the Austrian brass ensemble Pro Brass, the Austrian Brass Connection, the newly founded Vienna-Berlin Brass Quintet and the Berlin Philharmonic Brass Trio. He is also in demand worldwide as a soloist and performs regularly in Europe, the USA and Asia. As a soloist, he plays with renowned orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Chamber Orchestra, the China Philharmonic Orchestra, the New Japan Philharmonic and the Bach Collegium München.
Tarkövi is a lecturer at the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Academy and also gives masterclasses worldwide. Since 2018, he has been professor of trumpet at the Berlin University of the Arts.
