Adventures in New Music
London Sinfonietta (UK)
Adventures in New Music is an extensive concert series by the London Sinfonietta that invites audiences to explore and discover exciting musical landscapes. Contemporary classics are reimagined alongside other art forms, and new works are presented in new ways and new places to spark the audience’s imagination, tell them the stories of the great composers, and present works that connect with their lives. Adventures in New Music is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
THE BOULEZ/CAGE LETTERS: The project begins with an event that explores the fascinating exchange of ideas between two titans of the post-war compositional scene. Through readings and video projections, as well as performances of their music, London Sinfonietta presents how Boulez and Cage explored their art and came to radically different solutions.
A major school concert, entitled SOUND OUT, will see new works performed by young people.
With a commissioned work by Laurence Osborn, a UK premiere by Hannah Kendall and Berio’s classic Folk Songs, the voices of composers whose history has been forgotten or whose voices have not been heard will be explored. In another concert, Terry Riley’s iconic work IN C is reimagined through dance by Sasha Waltz.
At HUMANS, two commissions from emerging composers explore the human condition. Pablo Martinez’s new work examines the devastating impact of drugs on his parents’ lives. Sun Keting’s work celebrates human connection at a time when digital technology is leading to isolation.
LADIES IN BLOOMERS explores the exclusion of women from important institutions, in particular the struggle for recognition of female gardeners. The project investigates how the power of music and the act of gardening can bring communities together.
As part of the British/Polish year, there will also be a concert as part of Adventures in New Music, which presents the diverse musical styles of Poland, including music from different generations of Krause, Zubel and Mykietyn.
At INTERFACES, the audience experiences how music is created and performed. Two experts in jazz improvisation come together with soloists from the London Sinfonietta to create new music. Another highlight of the concert series is the NEXT GENERATION SIDE-BY-SIDE concert with young musicians from the Royal Academy of Music performing music by George Benjamin and Robin Haigh together with the London Sinfonietta.
