Black Box Music

Following its debut in Chicago in October 2023, Chicago-based ensembles Beyond This Point and Ensemble Dal Niente come together to present Simon Steen-Anderson’s Black Box Music at the Time:Span Festival in New York. This large-scale work is an innovative exploration of sound and visuals, combining percussion, amplified box, fifteen instruments and video.

Performed in a traditional theatre setting, Black Box Music transforms the stage into an instrument itself, examining the interplay between audio and visual elements of conducting and staging. The piece deconstructs the acts of conducting and puppet theatre, offering an exciting fusion of both. It is divided into three movements: Ouverture, Slow Middle Movement, and Self-Imploding Finale.

In addition to Black Box Music, the performance will feature other works by Steen-Anderson, helping to elevate this remarkable contemporary composer to a global stage.
