Commission to Aziza Sadikova

Theater Regensburg (DE)

The composer Aziza Sadikova is creating a concerto for horn and orchestra for the Theater Regensburg, which will be premiered as part of the 1st Philharmonic Concert in October 2024. The 20-25-minute work will be embedded between Franz Liszt’s symphonic poem Von der Wiege bis zum Grabe, which is a philosophical reflection on birth, death and rebirth, and Peter Tchaikovsky’s tragic, melancholy and masterful Symphony No. 6 in B minor Pathétique, whose secret programme Tchaikovsky took to his grave a few days after its premiere.

Berlin-based composer Aziza Sadikova was chosen for the commission not only because of her wealth of experience working with renowned conductors such as Kent Nagano and Omer Meir Wellber and soloists such as Hilary Hahn and Simone Rubino. The numerous performances of her music at renowned festivals and in major concert halls such as the BBC Proms, Wien Modern and the Gewandhaus Leipzig also contributed to the decision. Her work also plays an important role in the music world. Aziza Sadikova is known for her innovative approaches to fusing different musical traditions. Her music explores different areas of New Music from unconventional instrumental techniques and experiments with elements of musical theatre and complex structural and rhythmic components but is also influenced by the expressive and dramatic music of the Romantic period, to the depiction of elegant textures in the style of Neo-Baroque.

In addition to her work as a composer, which includes children’s concerts and a children’s opera, Aziza Sadikova is also active in education. She shares her knowledge and experience with young generations of musicians and thus contributes to the training and development of future talents. The Theater Regensburg project aims to build on this and create a new modern, multivisual educational format DISCOVER MUSIC!/THE FIRST PAGE, which is aimed specifically at school classes and young audiences. In this format, the composition process of the “first page of the horn concerto” will be accompanied by media and educationally prepared from the beginning to the printing. The project will conclude with a public rehearsal where the pupils will have the opportunity to engage in a direct dialogue with the composer, conductor and orchestra.

The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting the commission to Aziza Sadikova.
