Commission to Bernhard Lang: Inge und Jäcki
Stadttheater Klagenfurt (AT)
“This is the most beautiful summer of my life, and even when I’m a hundred years old, it will remain the most beautiful spring and summer.”
The opera Inge und Jäcki, composed by Bernhard Lang for the Stadttheater Klagenfurt, tells the short story of Ingeborg Bachmann’s first great love, of the last days of the war in Klagenfurt and the immediate post-war period, which the young poet recorded in her war diary in a few concise scenes. Added to this are the letters written to her a year later from Palestine by Jack Hamesh, a young Jewish man who was rescued from Vienna on the Kindertransport to London, came to Carinthia as a British soldier in 1945, and fell in love with 18-year-old Inge.
This coming-of-age story set in the turmoil of the immediate post-war period captures the metamorphosis of a childishly rebellious high school student from a convent school into a self-determined student and young poet, and tells of a summer that the famous poet described many years later as the most beautiful of her life.
The commission is made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
