Commission to Catherine Lamb
JACK Quartet, New York (US)
The JACK Quartet has commissioned a new work for string quartet from composer Catherine Lamb, titled Perspectiveless Rendering. Scheduled for premiere in the 2027/2028 season at Wigmore Hall and the Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, the piece follows the ensemble’s previous collaboration with Lamb on her 90-minute work divisio spiralis. The new composition is designed to fit more easily into standard repertoire programs, facilitating broader distribution and reaching a wider audience.
The work continues Lamb’s exploration of ratio-based intonation and rational tuning. Inspired by the writings of philosopher and filmmaker Mani Kaul, Lamb focuses on the intersection of Indian and European classical art practices, specifically regarding perception and articulation. The creative process involves a collaborative development phase, including workshops in Berlin and New York, to refine the technical and expressive possibilities of the string quartet without the need for extreme scordatura.
The commission to Catherine Lamb is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
