Commission to Charles Kwong

kollektiv international totem, Zurich (CH)

kollektiv international totem commissions Charles Kwong to compose a reinterpretation of Alvin Lucier’s Chambers (1968), exploring the spaces proposed by Lucier and the resonant possibilities of everyday objects. Lucier’s Chambers will be performed by kollektiv international totem members Léo Collin, Kay Zhang, Nuriia Khasenova, and Dalius Singer, together with Sharon Chan and Kwong himself.

Building on the instrumental constellation developed for this reinterpretation, Kwong’s work is conceived as a suite of “chambers,” treating the six-member ensemble as a single “mega-instrument” or “hyperobject.” Bringing together flute, saxophone, trumpet, shakuhachi, piano, theremin, and electronics, the work explores the different possibilities of this unusual combination of instruments and performers.
