Commission to Chaya Czernowin
Asociación SIGMA Project, San Lorenzo de El Escorial (ES)
For more than a decade, the saxophone quartet SIGMA Project has pursued a collaboration with Chaya Czernowin – a partnership that now culminates in the large-scale work Undersongs, composed for the ensemble and supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. The composition continues Czernowin’s exploration of the physicality of sound, the transformation of the voice, and the boundaries of listening. Conceived as a layered palimpsest of song fragments, Undersongs moves between fragility and resilience. The work transcends traditional chamber music, inhabiting a space between concert piece, opera, cycle, and sound installation, thereby expanding the boundaries between instrumental and vocal music.
Undersongs will premiere in May 2026 at the RESIS Festival in A Coruña and will be presented internationally at leading festivals, including Neue Musik Weingarten and Warsaw Autumn.
