Commission to Christian Mason

For the opening of this year’s Schlossmediale Werdenberg, the world premiere with the theme spring by Christian Mason will be presented. The composition for 2 theremins and glass harp will be presented for the last edition of the Schlossmediale under the direction of Mirella Weingarten. The theremin was the instrument in focus of the first Schlossmediale in 2012 and thus closes an arc to Mirella Weingarten’s last year as director.

Beginning as the origin of all things, the composition unfolds and illustrates the diversity and beauty of the spring: from small, flowing streams to mighty rivers such as the Rhine, which is fed by over 130 springs before flowing into the North Sea. The spring symbolizes not only light and life, but also knowledge and healing.

Since 2012, Schlossmediale Werdenberg has awarded an annual commission to composers. With its extraordinary atmosphere, the castle is artistically reinterpreted during the Schlossmediale. The commission to Christian Mason is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
