Commission to Elena Rykova

The HOAX Quartet’s new concert project RELIC deals with the multi-layered concept of relics, which serve as a metaphor for musical found objects (such as samples or objects used to produce sound). In an artistic way, RELIC deals with the controversial topic of cultural appropriation and opens a dialogue about the opposites of tradition vs. innovation, original vs. copy, and interpretation vs. creation.

As part of the project, Elena Rykova is writing a new commissioned composition, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. In her compositions, Elena Rykova often contrasts found objects with traditional instruments, complementing and enriching one with the other, often with a strong visual aspect. The concert series also features compositions by Jannik Giger, Jana De Troyer, and Steve Reich.
