Commission to Felipe Lara
loadbang, New York City (US)
Brazilian-American composer Felipe Lara composes the work Bonecas Russas (Portuguese for Russian dolls) for trumpet, baritone, bass clarinet and trombone for the New York ensemble loadbang. The composition is based on the text of the same name from the book Ó by the Brazilian author Nuno Ramos, with whom Felipe Lara collaborates. The work will explore self-referential aspects of Nuno Ramos’ text, through a quasi-fractal articulation of musical time, which will attempt to create self-similar relationships between the macro- and micro-articulation of the auditory experience. Felipe will also research specific aspects of the vocal/instrumental abilities of the performers in loadbang to create materials, musical objects, motifs, and textures unique to the ensemble, drawing from basic acoustic, idiomatic, and expressive qualities of the voice/instruments. Through experimentation, Mr. Lara will attempt to push both the ensemble and his own compositional process beyond the conventions, while searching for sounds that are the most germane.
Felipe Lara collaborates with the ensemble loadbang during his composition process. Together with the ensemble, Lara experiments and catalogs vocal and instrumental samples, tests them and works with this material before the finished composition is premiered.
The composition commission to Felipe Lara for the ensemble loadbang is enabled by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
