Commission to Fulya Uçanok
ARTER, Istanbul (TR)
Supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, Fulya Uçanok has been commissioned to write a new work for string quartet, metal plate with feedback system, and electronics. The metal plate is fitted with transducers and microphones, creating a feedback circuit that interacts directly with the quartet’s sound. The piece, titled Five Openings into Companioning, is structured as a suite of four or five sections, each focused on listening as an active, shared process.
The music draws on contemporary classical techniques alongside pop-influenced harmony, experimental noise, improvisation, and more lyrical passages. Program notes support audience members in following the interplay between instruments, feedback, and space. Five Openings into Companioning centers on companionship: a negotiation between composition and performers, acoustic and electronic elements, and the audience’s role as attentive listeners.
