Maurice Weiss
Commission to George Lewis
Association of Spóldzielnia Muzyczna, Kraków (PL)
George Lewis has been commissioned to write a new work for Spółdzielnia Muzyczna, a contemporary chamber ensemble based in Kraków. The composition takes inspiration from the work of Jerzy Nowosielski, particularly his engagement with the Eastern Orthodox liturgy, integrating elements of sacred vocal tradition into the instrumental ensemble.
This work offers an opportunity to introduce new compositional approaches to audiences in Poland, serving both artistic and educational purposes. Structured in three sections—an ensemble movement, a dialogue between wind instruments and piano, and a dialogue between strings and percussion—the piece explores extreme contrasts, unconventional rhythmic structures, and a dynamic approach to timbre. The full instrumentation includes violin, viola, cello, flutes, clarinets, saxophones, piano, and percussion, with a duration of 20 to 25 minutes. Lewis’s compositional style integrates acoustic and electronic media alongside improvisation.
The commission to George Lewis is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
