Commission to Giovanni Bertelli & Silvia Borzelli

Anomalia ETS / Azione_Improvvisa ensemble, Pergine Valsugana (IT)

The Azione_Improvvisa ensemble and Anomalia ETS present EOCENE / (de-)constructing humanity, a project commissioning new works by composers Giovanni Bertelli and Silvia Borzelli.

The title EOCENE refers to the Eocene epoch, a period approximately 50 million years ago characterized by drastic geological and climatic shifts. During this time, the planet experienced rapid global warming—known as the Eocene Thermal Maximum (ETM-1)— earth’s history offers a parallel to which led to a temperature rise of around 6°C over 20,000 years. This moment in the the climate crisis of today. The dolomitized rocks from this period, as visible in the Dolomitic arc, serve as silent witnesses—material remnants laden with geological and cultural significance. The stones embody resilience and continuity, transcending the anthropocentric narrative.

With EOCENE, composers Bertelli and Borzelli—together with the ensemble Azione_Improvvisa and Anomalia ETS—delve into the complicated relationship between humanity and the natural world. Bridging the acoustic and the electronic, the project explores a convergence of the organic and the artificial, the natural and the humanmade.
