Commission to Hanna Eimermacher

La Cage, Berlin (DE)

Hanna Eimermacher’s Elektrik is a music and dance performance by La Cage for five female performers and an active audience. At the heart of the work is the creation of music from the body itself. Breath, muscle tension, and voice are made audible and physically perceptible through specialized microphone techniques, transducers, and vibrating resonant surfaces. The body serves simultaneously as an instrument, a resonating chamber, and a loudspeaker. A vibrating floor and body-worn sound transmission systems allow Deaf audience members to experience sound directly through vibration. Through the dynamic interaction of performers, audience, and generators, voices are transformed by electricity, proximity, and group dynamics into rotating sound fields and rhythmic beats that move between intimacy and protest.

The choreography draws on principles of electrotherapy to explore states of tension. Electricity also acts as a medium of translation, transforming sound into light and making sign language visible.

The commission to Hanna Eimermacher and the production of Elektrik are supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
