Commission to Ingrid Laubrock
Studio Dan, Vienna (AT)
The Ensemble Studio Dan is commissioning a composition from Ingrid Laubrock, continuing its collaboration with the composer and saxophonist.
Laubrock’s music is characterised by the combination of precise, highly condensed composition and non-idiomatic improvisation. She belongs to a generation of musicians who no longer accept the historically entrenched separation between European art music and advanced jazz. Her work creates new musical spaces in which the aesthetic energies of both traditions are productively intertwined. In doing so, she follows in a tradition that takes up and further develops both the echoes of Schoenberg and European modernism and the impulses of Parker, Monk, Cage and Feldman.
Studio Dan sees itself as an ensemble that has been working on precisely this threshold since its foundation. Its members are equally at home in improvisational and compositional contexts and have developed an expertise that allows the musicians to implement cross-border projects not only conceptually but also practically.
Ingrid Laubrock’s new work will premiere in February 2026 and is made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
