Commission to Isabel Mundry

Lund Contemporary (SE)

Lund Contemporary, a biennial festival for contemporary music organized by the Odeum Music Centre at Lund University, celebrates its tenth anniversary in February 2027. To mark the occasion, the festival has invited the Arditti Quartet to premiere a new work by German composer Isabel Mundry.

Titled Lost Voices, the 18-minute string quartet draws on Mundry’s studies of Gregorian chant and Arabic music, as well as historical accounts of vanished Māori chants. The work also engages with questions explored in neuroscience and psychology: how experiences can be passed down across generations, and whether we can carry traces of experiences we have never had ourselves. Mundry extends these questions to music, particularly to the physical experience of listening and performing. As she asks: “Can we carry within us traces of a music we ourselves have never heard?”

The commission to Isabel Mundry is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
