Commission to Jannik Giger
Basel Sinfonietta (CH)
Where does the image end, and where does the sound begin? For the Basel Sinfonietta, Basel-based artist Jannik Giger is composing the commissioned work Blind Audition, in which sound and image merge into a single work. Blind Audition explores power, visibility, and judgment in the classical music world. It addresses situations involving auditions and tryouts within an oppressive labyrinth of waiting rooms, corridors, and audition rooms.
The first, purely film-based version of the work was developed in 2021 and is based on documentary material—interviews, fragments of memories, and commentary from teachers, conductors, and vocal coaches. Now the project is being adapted for the stage: the transformation into a live orchestral version opens up new dimensions of sound, space, and social dynamics. The live music breaks through the isolation of the media-based setting: in contrast to the solitary audition situation, the orchestra appears visibly as a collective. Thus, the entire hall—including the audience—becomes part of the whole: observing, participating… judging?
The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is making the commission of this composition by Jannik Giger for the Basel Sinfonietta possible.
