Commission to José Manuel López López

Asociación Activa la Idea, Sueca (ES)

The XXII edition of Mostra Sonora Sueca—an international contemporary music festival—is dedicated to José Manuel López López, honoring his long-standing artistic and pedagogical contributions. The festival will feature his music across six concerts, including the premiere of a new commissioned work for percussionist Miquel Bernat and pianist Alberto Rosado.

The piece investigates the interplay between harmonic or inharmonic verticality and granular textures, contrasting ordinary musical time with microtime to expand polyphonic perception across extremely slow and fast scales.

The piano part includes preparations with Blu Tack, electronic bows, and small metal plates or CDs, along with direct interaction with the timpani. The percussion setup spans vibraphone, tubular bells, timpani, tam-tam, cymbals, glockenspiel, metal curtains, and chimes, using paired and unpaired double-bass bows for complex resonance. Both performers intervene inside each other’s instruments to shape timbre.

The commission to José Manuel López López is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
