Commission to Linda Buckley, Elaine Mitchener & Krõõt-Kärt Kaev

Sound Festival, Aberdeen (UK)

Three composers—Linda Buckley, Elaine Mitchener, and Krõõt-Kärt Kaev—have been commissioned to create new works for voice and electronics, to be premiered at the Sound Festival (Aberdeen), New Music Dublin, and Spitalfields Festival (London).

Each composition, lasting between 10–15 minutes, will be performed by soprano Mimi Doulton and Jonathan Higgins on electronics. The brief invites the composers to reflect on the meaning of “Europe” and “being European” in the year 2026—a decade after Brexit, in a time shaped by rising right-wing politics, the ongoing war on Ukraine, and escalating climate-related crises.

Incorporating spoken texts by journalists and poets from across Europe—including the voices of refugees and individuals directly affected by war—the commissions aim to offer a diverse and layered exploration of European identity today. With performances taking place across Scotland, Ireland, and England, the program engages with the distinct political and historical relationships each nation holds with the idea of Europe.
