Commission to Madli Marje Gildemann & Samuel Hvozdík

International Society for Contemporary Music, Vienna (AT)

The Young Composer Award, established in 2002 by the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM), is a key initiative dedicated to supporting and promoting emerging composers under the age of 35. Each year, an international jury evaluates the works presented at the World New Music Days festival, selecting a winner whose work demonstrates outstanding artistic promise. For performance at the World New Music Days 2026 festival in Bucharest, Romania, the ISCM has commissioned two past winners of the ISCM Young Composer Award to write new works, supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

Madli Marje Gildemann, born in 1994 in Estonia, was awarded the 2023 Young Composer Award for Osmosis for violin, viola, cello and piano, performed at the World New Music Days 2023 in Soweto, South Africa. She has been commissioned to compose a new string quartet with the option of adding electronics. The work will be performed by the Romanian Arcadia Quartet.

Samuel Hvozdik, born in 1993 in Slovakia, received the award in 2024 for his organ work Magma, performed at the World New Music Days 2024 in the Faroe Islands. For the 2026 festival, he has been commissioned to write a new work for choir and live electronics. The piece will be performed by the Madrigal Choir, Romania’s National Chamber Choir.
