Commission to Malika Kishino
HANATSUmiroir, Strasbourg (FR)
Each sound has a specific energy that can create a sound organism. In her music theater composition Shades, seven states between shadow and light Japanese composer Malika Kishino diametrically juxtaposes these sound organisms to create contrasts that develop a subtle palette of shades, illustrating the infinite nuances that separate shadow from light, noise from silence, death from birth. Shades, seven states between shadow and light is a musical and choreographic performance for two instrumentalists, two dancers, video and light, inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki’s essay In Praise of Shadow. The work will be divided into seven episodes, each inspired by an excerpt from Tanizaki’s essay. In it, he draws a parallel between the conception of aesthetics in the West and the East, developing the idea that the way we comprehend the world and behave is closely linked to physical materials (tiles, wood, paper, lacquer, ceramics), colours, and especially lighting, which influence not only our approach to space, but also our perception and representation of others. The composition commission to Malika Kishino for the ensemble HANATSUmiroir is made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
