Commission to Peter Jakober

Stichting Gross & Marinissen, Amsterdam (NL)

As part of the Soft Strength concert project, five composers invite their audience to intensify their perception of the senses and sharpen their sensitivity for their counterparts with subtle, barely perceptible sounds, noises and images. A strong sense of mutual feeling for each other creates the basis for a positive vision of the future. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting the commission to Austrian composer Peter Jakober as part of this project.

In Peter Jakober’s new work, the use of electronics blurs the line between artificial and living sound: ‘The new work will be an interplay between human and machine sound and will partially separate the visual sound experience from the auditory one. Pre-recorded material is juxtaposed with human playing. The technique I often use, in which the human plays with clicks (usually tempo-polyphonically layered), also points to a central parameter of my work: the human tries to react to the precisely constructed click of the ‘machine’ but can never be as precise as it. Somehow also a kind of dehumanisation. Not only as a pessimistic vision, but for me as an exciting sonic exploration of the transitions.’
