Commission to Philippe Manoury

The Accademia Musicale Chigiana of Siena has commissioned composer Philippe Manoury to create a new work for female voice and live electronics. The premiere performance will feature vocalist Juliana Snapper and electronic musician Miller Puckette.

In his previous work, Manoury has explored the dynamic relationship between the human voice and electronic sound. For this new composition, he is considering setting an excerpt from James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, a text inviting both vocal experimentation and interpretative freedom. The surreal, fluid nature of Joyce’s language aligns naturally with the distinctive performance practices of Snapper and Puckette, creating opportunities for a close interplay between voice, text, and electronics.
