Commission to Piyawat Louilarpprasert

Spaceship Ensemble Stichtung, The Hague (NL)

As part of the Spaceship Ensemble’s new concert series, the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation supports a commission to composer Piyawat Louilarpprasert. The program includes premieres by Louilarpprasert, Mari Moko, and Julian Maple-Oliveira.

Louilarpprasert’s piece, Futuristic Octopus, is an installation for eight players using custom-made “tentacle” instruments and kinetic sound objects. Inspired by his earlier work with the Spaceship Ensemble at Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2022, the piece continues Louilarpprasert’s interest in human-machine hybrids and body-based sound production. Performers interact with the tentacle-like instruments and air-driven devices that create underwater-like textures, such as bubbling, gurgling, and air-pressure-based sounds. Futuristic Octopus is completely free of electronics, instead relying on live, immersive performance practices.

The program also includes a kinetic sound sculpture by Mari Moko, which explores tensions between microtonality and Kodály-style pentatonic scales, and The Legendairy Mecha-Cow by Julian Maple-Oliveira—a piece with a fictional narrative around a mechanized cow figure.
