Markus Bruckner

Commission to Sarah Nemtsov

PHACE – Ensemble for New Music, Vienna (AT)

Sarah Nemtsov’s works are characterised by far-reaching, finely ramified sound structures, peppered with countless signs, metaphors, phrases, symbols and influences from every conceivable genre and music, and yet deep roots in the tonality of the European musical tradition cannot be ignored. Without shying away from breaks and profound interventions in the tonality, Nemtsov likes to use electronic means of alienation and artificiality, but also manages to breathe an organic vitality into the music that can hardly be imitated.

Her new work Waves, commissioned by PHACE and the Osterfestival Tirol, is inspired by the flowing alternating currents between individual and collective consciousness in Virginia Woolf’s 1931 novel The Waves.

It is a musical search for the self, for identity in all its forms and manifestations and for the way in which multiple selves and multiple perspectives can weave together a pluralistic truth.

The commission to Sarah Nemtsov is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. Waves will be premiered as part of the PHACE Ensemble’s concert AN DEN RÄNDERN at the Osterfestival in Tirol 2025.
