Commission to Sir James MacMillan

London Symphony Orchestra (UK)

The London Symphony Orchestra, together with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, has commissioned a new composition by Sir James MacMillan, funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. The work will be premiered at the LSO’s 2024/25 season opening at the Barbican Centre. With Sir James MacMillan’s world premiere, the LSO continues its tradition of opening its season with a major new commission. This concert will also be Sir Antonio Pappano’s first appearance in his new role as Principal Conductor of the LSO following his year as Principal Conductor Designate.

MacMillan’s work continues his long-standing relationship with the LSO, which dates back to 2008 when the LSO premiered his St. John Passion. This new commission supports the orchestra’s ambition to make a significant contribution to the field of new music, promoting experimental music that inspires and challenges London audiences, while raising the LSO’s profile as a specialist in contemporary music. Following the world premiere in London, MacMillan’s new work will be performed in Melbourne, Singapore, Porto and Stockholm.
