Commission to Wilbert Bulsink
Quatuor Molinari, Montréal (CA)
The Molinari Quartet is preparing Molinari / Mondriaan: Musical Inspirations, an international concert tour featuring new works by Wilbert Bulsink, Denis Gougeon, and video artist Udo Prinsen. The project draws conceptual and aesthetic parallels between two modernist painters—Piet Mondriaan and Guido Molinari—and contemporary music from Canada and the Netherlands. Also included in the program are works by Guus Janssen and John Rea.
With the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, Wilbert Bulsink has been invited to compose a piece inspired by Molinari’s artistic style. His composition will be included as part of an immersive performance, integrating video artwork by Udo Prinsen. During the performance, the musicians’ movements will be incorporated into the video, creating a dialogue between music and visual art.
Following the live performances—which will be recorded—Prinsen’s film will be set to Bulsink’s music and featured in museum exhibitions and in film festivals. His visual style resonates with Molinari’s work, emphasizing form, color, rhythm, and motion—qualities equally present in the music and the visual elements of the project.
