Commission to Wojtek Blecharz
Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, Berlin (DE)
In 2026, the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop will celebrate its 20th anniversary. At the heart of the anniversary program is Local Times, an installation-based opera by Wojtek Blecharz, developed in collaboration with the Radical Polish Ansambl and choreographer Ewa Dziarnowska. The commission to Wojtek Blecharz for Local Times is made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
Building on the historical dichotomy between aria and recitative, Wojtek Blecharz conceives an opera as a space of experience. Music, movement, and space merge into an open architecture in which the audience can freely navigate between different temporal orders. Time thus appears not only linear, but relational and multi-layered—as something that emerges in sound, body, and perception. The performance takes place in both large spaces of the Radialsystem, the Halle and the Saal, which are connected by a door.
Blecharz’s work combines sound, space, and body into immersive situations. His compositional approach always considers the performance space and the physical presence of the musicians: sounds emerge as social, spatial, and performative practices. His works move between acoustic installation, sound-based sculpture, and physically experiential ritual. In Local Times, language in his sound installation becomes a vibrating tapestry of text that intertwines with the performers’ movements. Dziarnowska translates musical structures into choreographic topographies that the audience can actively wander through. The musicians of Kaleidoskop act as performative musicians—their bodies are carriers of sound, movement, and time.
