Commission to Wolfgang Mitterer

Fondazione Haydn, Bolzano (IT)

When night falls, the time of shadows begins. In the transition from day to night, reality and fantasy mix, boundaries dissolve, these are stories of farewells and beginnings, space and time seem infinitely stretched, doors and paths lead to nowhere. Wishes and desires elude reason, curiosity and instinct take over and the dance of shadows begins in the play of the children of the night. A journey into the unknown begins….

The directions of one of the most famous journeys in world literature: “…second star to the right and straight on till morning” – A journey to Neverland, the land where Peter Pan and his lost children fight against Captain Hook and his pirates, Indians and elves on horseback and, not to forget, the famous crocodile who plays a decisive role.

The Tyrolean composer Wolfgang Mitterer and the British screenwriter and director Sir David Pountney tell the story of the boy who never grew up in a completely new way in a completely new adaptation of Matthew J. Barrie’s novel, which was written after the first performance on 27 December 1904, and show that Barrie’s novel is far darker and crueller than connoisseurs of the Disney version assume. A story set in the realm of shadows and the human abyss. The play is directed by the British-Irish director Daisy Evans, who already took part in the previous production of the Fondazione Haydn Stiftung in 2019 in Trento – Cunning Little Vixen. The commission to Wolfgang Mitterer for the Fonazione Haydn is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
