Commissions to Annelies Van Parys & Agata Zubel

European Union Youth Orchestra, Grafenegg (AT)

In March 2026, the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) marks its 50th anniversary with a new world-premiere edition of The [Uncertain] Four Seasons, performed at the European Parliament and during a community residency in Strasbourg. Created ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), the project reimagines Vivaldi’s score using climate-data modelling, reshaping the music according to geospatial predictions for 2050 to reflect projected shifts in rainfall, biodiversity, and extreme weather.

For 2026, the EUYO collaborates with Europa Nostra to focus on four European cities facing direct climate threats—Strasbourg, Nicosia, Venice, and Reykjavik. The new cycle brings together the commissions Spring in Strasbourg by Annelies Van Parys, and Winter in Reykjavik by Agata Zubel, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. In addition, Floating Autumn in Venice by Carmen Fizzarotti will be performed, alongside a semi-improvised Summer in Nicosia created by Hugo Ticciati with EUYO musicians. Each work stands independently yet forms part of a complete set performed alongside Vivaldi’s original.

The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation supports the commissions to Annelies Van Parys and Agata Zubel.
