Commissions to Dai Fujikura, Hannah Kendall & Blaise Ubaldini
Musikkollegium Winterthur (CH)
In the 2024/25 concert season, the Musikkollegium Winterthur is awarding a total of three commissions: to the British composer Hannah Kendall, the Japanese composer Dai Fujikura and the Swiss-French composer Blaise Ubaldini. The commissions are funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
During the triptych spanning three concert seasons with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s last three symphonies as the starting point, the Musikkollegium Winterthur commissions a mirror work from a female composer each year: Andrea Tarrodi in 2022, Diana Syrse in 2023 and Hannah Kendall in 2024 for Symphony No. 41. This will allow the audience to experience how female composers living today empathise with Mozart’s world of sound and thought and interpret it in the 21st century.
Dai Fujikura wrote his work for the two soloists Patricia Kopatchinskaja (violin) and Claire Chase (flute). Both artists will perform the work for the first time in Switzerland in Winterthur. The conductor is Vimbayi Kaziboni.
As part of the project Zusammen, insieme, ensemble – Legenden, Leggende, Légendes by the Association of Swiss Professional Orchestras, Blaise Ubaldini’s new composition is being created. The unifying element of the project is a story by Claire Heuwekemeijer in the respective national language, to which the inhabitants of Lausanne, Lugano and Winterthur contribute their own impressions and perceptions of their city. The result is a multi-layered, colourful concert experience involving the local population.
