Commissions to Eloaine Lovis Hübner & Stefan Prins
Pony Says, Stuttgart (DE)
Eloaine Lovis Hübner and Stefan Prins are composing new works for the concert series Pony Says Idioms by the Pony Says trio. Since its founding, three themes have shaped the trio’s artistic vision: instrumental and physical virtuosity, musical idioms spanning contemporary music and electronically influenced club culture, and their position at the intersection of interpretation and improvisation. These three dimensions—virtuosity, idioms, and identity—form the foundation of the trio’s work and the concert format.
Stefan Prins views the instruments as extensions of the body. When making music, the instrument and the performer become a single unit in which acoustic and electronic sounds are equally present. In his new work for electric guitar, keyboards, drums, and live electronics, Prins draws on typical gestures from the rock/pop context. The result is a “human-analog meta-amplifier.” At the same time, the through-composed work deliberately leaves gaps, making a balance between the written composition and ad-hoc improvisation audible.
In her new work Intimate Shoutouts, Eloaine Lovis Hübner takes a very personal approach. The starting point is her feminizing voice therapy, as a result of which she had to relearn her voice as an instrument. She applies this principle to the trio. Hübner shifts the playing styles of the electric guitar, keyboard, and drums, having the trio play the instruments in atypical ways, expand their range with auxiliary objects, and slightly alter their functions. The work is modeled on the form of a song: simple and self-contained.
