Commissions to Helmuth Flammer and Michael Quell
Stowarzyszenie NeoArte, Gdansk (PL)
What makes people go forward and develop? What makes each new generation become more creative and progressive? Does this also apply to contemporary music? Does each new generation of composers negate their masters? Are classical instruments and their long-established settings able to compete with the latest technologies? Is the ever-present tendency to search for something new in music a viable path? Is it possible to create something new in a world where, according to many experts, theorists and practitioners alike, everything has already been invented? The project New Cross-Border Cultural Perspectives wants to give a creative answer to all these questions. It is a meeting platform for artists of different generations and schools of composition. Across borders – geographical, generational, ideological, or sexual – a creative consensus is to be found. The common denominator for all these aspects is a string quartet. In six pieces, new possibilities for acoustic string quartet instruments and their electric counterparts become visible and audible. Acoustic playing techniques for string quartet are combined with electronic instruments, synthesizers, loopers and videos. As part of the New Cross-Border Cultural Perspectives project, two new string quartets will be composed by German composers Helmuth Flammer and Michael Quell. These composition commissions for Stowarzyszenie NeoArte are made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
