Commissions to Hossam Mahmoud and Amr Okba

Ensemble Aventure, Freiburg im Breisgau (DE)

The Freiburg-based Ensemble Aventure is developing a concert programme with Egyptian composers under the title liqa’at – Begegnungen (encounters). Especially in times of wars and economic crises, we need more communication, respect and understanding with each other. The project liqa’at – Begegnungen aims to encourage artistic exchange between Egypt and Germany. Composers and musicians from both countries meet and enter into dialogue with each other. With the integration of Egyptian instruments into the ensemble, concerts in Egypt and Germany as well as composition commissions, the project is a sign of intercultural artistic cooperation between the two countries. By including Egyptian instruments in the ensemble, an innovative sound body is created that promises new and unexpected listening experiences.

The core of the programme is formed by two commissions to Egyptian composers, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation:  Hossam Mahmoud combines oriental and occidental influences with contemporary elements. He is known for his commitment to the dialogue of cultures. The initiator of the collaboration, Amr Okba, reflects in his works and compositions his relationship to Western classical music in Egypt. The concert programme is intended to enable a broad audience to experience the results of the cross-national artistic collaboration and the new listening experiences that come with it, leading to greater curiosity and understanding between two cultural landscapes.
