Commissions to Igor C Silva & Yiran Zhao
European Concert Halls Organisation, Brussels (BE)
The European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO) brings together eight leading concert halls to commission new works by Yiran Zhao for ensemble and by Igor C Silva for symphony orchestra, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. These two new compositions will be integrated into the regular concert seasons to give the emerging composers the opportunity to reach a wider, less specialised audience and to give regular concert-goers the chance to come into contact with contemporary music. Each of the eight partner venues plays a central role by involving the respective local orchestras or ensembles to perform these commissioned works.
Yiran Zhao will compose a 20-minute piece for an ensemble of around 15 musicians, including clarinet, bassoon, three brass players, two percussionists, piano and string quintet. After a residency including a concert at the Porto Casa da Música, her work will be performed by Ensemble Lucilin at the Philharmonie du Luxembourg and Ensemble Modern at the Kölner Philharmonie.
Igor C Silva creates a 25-minute piece for symphony orchestra, electronics and two to four improvising soloists chosen from the various local jazz scenes (guitar, piano, saxophone, bass or drums). After a residency at the Kölner Philharmonie and a performance of the work with the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the work will be performed in Lisbon, Budapest, Porto, Barcelona, Katowice and Lyon.
