Commissions to Kee Yong Chong, Hitumi Kaneko, Michael Norris & Tsung-Hsien Yang

Asian Composers League, Tokyo (JP)

The Asian Composers’ League (ACL) was founded in 1973 to promote activities in the field of music in Asian countries and to support mutual exchange between these countries. The ACL is a contemporary music organisation in the Asia-Pacific region with 14 member countries and regions: Australia, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Turkey. The first ACL conference and festival took place in Hong Kong in 1973 and became an annual or biannual event that not only focused on contemporary Western music but also on traditional music from the Asia-Pacific region and contemporary music that combines both Western and Asia-Pacific instruments and influences.

In February 2025 the festival will be held in Japan and organised by the Japanese member of the Asian Composers’ League, represented by the Japan Federation of Composers (JFC). The majority of the programme will be selected from submissions by member countries. The festival takes place in Kawasaki, Japan, from 3 to 7 February 2025. For one concert the Asian Composers’ League is commissioning four works from composers in the region, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation: Tsung-Hsien Yang from Taiwan, Hitomi Kaneko from Japan, Michael Norris from New Zealand and Kee Yong Chong from Malaysia. All four are considered outstanding composers in their respective countries and enjoy a high reputation. The works are performed by the Japanese trio Ventus.
