Commissions to Manuel Rodríguez-Valenzuela, Ruud Roelofsen, Elena Rykova & Itziar Viloria
FRAMES Percussion, Barcelona (ES)
In 2024, the percussion ensemble FRAMES celebrates its 10th anniversary. The group has become one of the most active and well-known ensembles in Spain, promoting contemporary music in the country through numerous world premieres and commissions for young composers. During its 10th anniversary season, the ensemble will give numerous concerts. To celebrate this occasion, the program includes four world premieres by national and international composers who have made a significant impact in recent years. FRAMES Percussion commissioned Elena Rykova, Manuel Rodríguez-Valenzuela, Ruud Roelofsen and Itziar Viloria to create compositions based on the codex El llibre Vermell de Montserrat. This medieval manuscript is kept in the Montserrat Monastery, a place of great cultural importance in Catalan history, located in the mountains of Montserrat. The codex is famous for its collection of religious music and pilgrim songs from the 14th century. The four commissions are supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
Composer Elena Rykova will combine the inspiration from El llibre vermell de Montserrat with her personal memories in her piece Echoes of Montserrat: Rediscovering the Lost Pages for 6 percussionists. Inspired by a visit to the Abbey of Montserrat in 2008 and based on her audio and video memories as well as archival material, Rykova focuses on reinterpreting the lost pages of El llibre vermell de Montserrat and transforming the disappearance into a creative liberation.
