Commissions to Maxim Kolomiiets, Philipp Maintz, Karola Obermüller, Daniel Smutny & Ying Wang
KlangForum Heidelberg (DE)
Voice/s and Instruments is not only the name of a group of works by Morton Feldman and an album initiated by John Cage, but also the starting point of a cross-event annual project of KlangForum Heidelberg: the most important specific ensemble forms developed over more than 30 years by the instrumentalists of ensemble aisthesis and the vocal soloists of SCHOLA HEIDELBERG under the direction of Walter Nußbaum (and now also Ekkehard Windrich) will be specifically thematised and further developed in several composition commissions for the 2023/24 season.
The decisive factor in these commissioned works for the annual project Voices, as in voices and instruments is the fundamental collaboration between the composers and the voices and instruments, i.e. singers and instrumentalists, already practised in the rehearsal process. The interpretation, which is expressed in refined articulation, intonation and microform design that transcends sections (or sound generators) and approaches one another, is to be systematised by short-circuiting with the compositional process itself. The entire ensemble of voices and instruments is understood on several levels as a homogeneous body of sound. An integral part of the compositions is to open up the processes of the works at an unusually early stage and to treat rehearsals, joint elaboration and conceptual negotiations as part of the history of the work even before the final form of the work is created.
The composition commissions to Ying Wang, Maxim Kolomiiets, Philipp Maintz, Karola Obermüller and Daniel Smutny for KlangForum Heidelberg are funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
