Commissions to Samir Amarouch and Ying Wang

RCCR Projects, Berlin (DE)

Within the framework of the festival INS OFFENE..! Samir Amarouch and Ying Wang will create new compositions. The two commissions are made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

Trio by Samir Amarouch is an interdisciplinary work that offers a reflection on perception, form and time. The instrumentation with soprano, saxophone, electric guitar, microtonal accordion and three dancers is reminiscent of folk music and traditional balls, while the timbres and harmonies take influences from experimental and electronic dance music as well as the Berber music of northern Morocco. Homorhythm, acceleration, deceleration, pulse progressions, groove and rhythmic micro-variations take centre stage. In collaboration with the dancer Zoé Lakhnati (P.A.R.T.S. Brussels), a dance interpretation of the music is created that visualises the musicians’ movements. The result is a score that is both musical and dance. The movement is perceived in the musical development and made visible through the movement of the dancing bodies. Moving these variations of the micro and macro sound structure into the spatial and visual field allows us to delve deeper into the different sensations of rhythm and time and emphasise their subtleties.

Double Wings is an audio-visual concept by Ying Wang for two identical instruments and two video projections to create their own reflections and make music together. The piece starts dreamlike poetic and evolves, referring to the themes of the festival INS OFFENE..! of 2023 Dream and Flying. The two musicians are initially in different places in the space and the audience can hear and see the piece on three levels. The double mirroring creates the double-wing effect and offers the audience an experience from different perspectives.
